After being presented an amazing opportunity in March of 2013 to work for State Farm, my dream career came to fruition and I never looked back. My grandfather Edward whom I’ve always admired so much often told me, “Do something that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I took his recommendation and chased that dream in order to make it a reality. (Series 2021-1) catastrophe bond to our Deal Directory, where you can read about and analyse almost every cat bond ever issued.I’ve always had a fire on the inside of me to help people and to pursue things that align with my passions. We’ve added this new $350 million Merna Re II Ltd. This club approach to marketing its cat bonds can also help provide important pricing indications, from across both traditional and ILS markets, helping a sponsor to identify the best source and cost-of-capital for its overall reinsurance program. State Farm’s private, or club based approach to the catastrophe bond market has helped it develop deeper relationships with key ILS investor and ILS fund markets, we understand, especially with those that also play a key role in its traditional reinsurance renewal. State Farm has been a regular sponsor, having now returned to the catastrophe bond market each year since 2013, making it nine years in succession the insurer has sponsored a Merna Re cat bond deal. This latest cat bond is State Farm’s twelfth issuance to use the Merna Re name and thirteenth cat bond transaction that we have covered from the carrier, dating back to its first in 2000. The notes were priced to pay investors a coupon of roughly 3.75%, we understand. We understand from sources that the notes have an expected loss of around the 1.8% mark, which makes them riskier than the last two years of Merna Re earthquake cat bond notes. The notes will provide State Farm with earthquake reinsurance against losses from events in the New Madrid fault region on an indemnity trigger and we expect per-occurrence basis, with the protection running across a three-year term to early April 2024. Merna Re II Ltd., a Bermuda domiciled special purpose insurer, has issued and sold $350 million of Class A notes to cat bond funds and ILS investors, with the proceeds used to collateralize an underlying reinsurance agreement between the issuer and the sponsor State Farm. The use of catastrophe bonds for reinsurance protection at State Farm hasn’t changed though, with the Merna Re transactions continuing to provide the insurer with cover against losses from New Madrid zone earthquakes. This is now the sixth year in succession where State Farm has chosen to source collateralized reinsurance capacity from insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds and investors on a privately marketed and placed basis.įrom 2016 onwards State Farm has followed this club deal approach, electing to have its new cat bond transactions marketed more closely held, to a select group of catastrophe bond investors. (Series 2021-1) issuance.Īs with all recent Merna Re cat bonds sponsored by State Farm, the issuance has been relatively privately placed with a select group of initial investors, although the resulting $350 million of notes are now more broadly available on the cat bond secondary market. US primary insurance giant State Farm has again returned to the 144A catastrophe bond market for another slice of New Madrid earthquake reinsurance protection to sponsor its latest capital markets deal, a $350 million Merna Re II Ltd.

The first e-book may be the Index Thomisticus, a heavily annotated electronic index to the works of Thomas Aquinas, prepared by Roberto Busa, S.J. Some notable candidates include the following: The inventor of the first e-book is not widely agreed upon. Schuessler correlates it with a DJ spinning bits of old songs to create a beat or an entirely new song, as opposed to just a remix of a familiar song. In an article, Jennifer Schuessler writes, "The machine, Brown argued, would allow readers to adjust the type size, avoid paper cuts and save trees, all while hastening the day when words could be 'recorded directly on the palpitating ether.'" Brown believed that the e-reader (and his notions for changing the text itself) would bring a completely new life to reading. However, he correctly predicted the miniaturization and portability of e-readers. Later e-readers never followed a model at all like Brown's. In his book, Brown says movies have outmaneuvered the book by creating the "talkies" and, as a result, reading should find a new medium:Ī simple reading machine which I can carry or move around, attach to any old electric light plug and read hundred-thousand-word novels in 10 minutes if I want to, and I want to.īrown's notion, however, was much more focused on reforming orthography and vocabulary, than on medium ("It is time to pull out the stopper" and begin "a bloody revolution of the word."): introducing huge numbers of portmanteau symbols to replace normal words, and punctuation to simulate action or movement, so it is not clear whether this fits into the history of "e-books" or not. He titled it The Readies, playing off the idea of the "talkie". Some trace the concept of an e-reader, a device that would enable the user to view books on a screen, to a 1930 manifesto by Bob Brown, written after watching his first " talkie" (movie with sound). A device that is designed specifically for reading e-books is called an "e-reader", "ebook device", or "eReader". īesides published books and magazines that have a digital equivalent, there are also digital textbooks, that are intended to serve as the text for a class and help in technology-based education.Į-books are also referred to as "ebooks", "eBooks", "Ebooks", "e-Books", "e-journals", "e-editions", or "digital books". By 2014, 50% of American adults had an e-reader or a tablet, compared to 30% owning such devices in 2013. By 2014, 28% of adults had read an e-book, compared to 23% in 2013. In the U.S., the amount of e-book reading is increasing. In addition, for programming books, code examples can be copied. With e-books, "electronic bookmarks make referencing easier, and e-book readers may allow the user to annotate pages." "Although fiction and non-fiction books come in e-book formats, technical material is especially suited for e-book delivery because it can be digitally searched" for keywords. The main reasons for people buying e-books are possibly lower prices, increased comfort (as they can buy from home or on the go with mobile devices) and a larger selection of titles. By the early 2010s, e-books had begun to overtake hardcover by overall publication figures in the U.S. With e-books, users can browse through titles online, and then when they select and order titles, the e-book can be sent to them online or the user can download the e-book. The paper books are then delivered to the reader by mail or another delivery service. With print books, readers are increasingly browsing through images of the covers of books on publisher or bookstore websites and selecting and ordering titles online. In the 2000s, there was a trend of print and e-book sales moving to the Internet, where readers buy traditional paper books and e-books on websites using e-commerce systems. E-books can be read on dedicated e-reader devices, but also on any computer device that features a controllable viewing screen, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book", some e-books exist without a printed equivalent. An ebook (short for electronic book), also known as an e-book or eBook, is a book publication made available in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both readable on the flat-panel display of computers or other electronic devices. So we could be in for a chaotic two years in the south wing of the Capitol and look back at the 2022 elections as a Republican victory in name only.Superliminal is a first-person puzzle game developed by Pillow Castle Games, in which the player’s perception of scale is manipulated in order to solve puzzles. And conservative hardliners made it difficult for Republicans to govern even when they had wider majorities in 18. While a GOP House would mostly be playing defense (killing Democratic bills, conducting investigations into the Biden administration) rather than offense (passing its own bills), it would still need to pass bipartisan legislation like the budget. More importantly, it will likely be a difficult feat for House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy to muster up 218 votes to pass anything - or even be elected speaker. Republicans controlled 242 seats after the 2010 midterms and 247 after 2014 Democrats held 233 after the 2006 midterms and 235 after 2018. But even their raw seat total is underwhelming by the standards of recent midterms. 2 Of course, Republicans had an unexpectedly good 2020 election in the House, so they were starting from a higher baseline (you can’t flip a seat that you already control). Since the end of World War II, the president’s party has lost an average of 26 House seats in midterm elections. They will likely gain around eight seats, which is relatively low by historical standards. That’s a big deal! On the other hand, though, Republicans have to be pretty disappointed with their showing. So how should we assess the House results for Republicans? On the one hand, Republicans took control of the chamber and ended Democrats’ ability to pass legislation without GOP approval. It was a good election for Republicans in states like New York, but a bad one for Republicans in states like Ohio, where Democrats scored two House upsets. 1 Indeed, one of the hallmarks of this midterm was how various states experienced it differently. Notably, all three GOP-flipped districts were in New York, one of the brightest spots for Republicans nationally this election. Results in districts where the Democratic candidate had between a 75 percent and 95 percent chance of winning, according to the Deluxe version of FiveThirtyEight’s final preelection forecast, as of 7:04 p.m. The status of ‘likely Democratic’ House races They won two “lean Democratic” districts and one “likely Democratic” district. Republicans didn’t score as many upsets, but they had their fair share, too. This was likely because Kent was an extremely weak candidate: He has a history of working and associating with white nationalists and defeated a more moderate Republican in the primary. However, she defeated veteran Joe Kent 50 percent to 49 percent. Eastern raceĭemocrats even won one district that our forecast had rated as “solid Republican.” In Washington’s 3rd District, business owner Marie Gluesenkamp Perez had just a 2-in-100 chance of winning, according to our forecast. Eastern raceīut Democrats also won five of the 16 districts that our forecast rated as “likely Republican.” This includes Colorado’s 8th District, where Democratic state Rep. Results in districts where both candidates had less than a 60 percent chance of winning, according to the Deluxe version of FiveThirtyEight’s final preelection forecast, as of 7:04 p.m. For example, Democrats won at least seven of the 13 districts rated as “toss-ups” by FiveThirtyEight’s final forecast, while Republicans won at least five. And interestingly, Democrats didn’t do that just by winning all the close races they made some strikes deep into GOP territory. So Democrats did a bit better than we reckoned, although 221 seats for the GOP was still among the most likely outcomes. Eastern Raceĭoes not include races where both candidates are from the same party.įiveThirtyEight’s final preelection Deluxe forecast expected that, on average, Republicans would win 230 House seats and Democrats would win 205.
